History of Sunnyvale Christian School

Founded on October 4th of 1979 by Irene Wetlesen, Sunnyvale Christian School began as a dream in her heart and became a reality as First Baptist Church of Sunnyvale embraced the dream.

The school began on that first day with only 4 students.  It was a preschool filled with excitement and hopes for the future.  Karen Grooms was the very first principal, of the then Sonshine Sun-Valley Christian School.  Later the name was changed to Sunnyvale Christian School.  The school began to grow in numbers and more classes opened up.  The school was then expanded to include Kindergarten.

After much prayer, and in faith, First Baptist Church of Sunnyvale opened a new wing.  On March 1, 1987, the new building was opened  The whole church attended the ceremony and excitement filled their hearts, wanting to see what God was going to accomplish in and through their obedience.  The school added 1st - 4th grades shortly after the building was opened.  After time, a 5th and 6th grade were added.

In 1991 a fire destroyed a lot of the new building, but the fire did not destroy the purposes of God.  The building was rebuilt and classes continued.

The preschool was also growing and expanding.  In 1997, a sister school named "Little Lambs" was opened to expand the ministry.  During this time, the school as a whole continued in the favor of the Lord.  Another campus was opened at El Camino Christian Church.  The total number of students enrolled at that time was over 300.

After much prayer and need for unification, the campuses were brought back together.  Shortly after that the name of the church was changed to Crosswalk Community Church, under the leadership of John Christie.

The school has seen many teachers and many principals, but one thing remains constant, the desire to give children a quality education and to show them the Love of Jesus.  Through the years, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been taught to hundreds and hundreds of children and their families.  Many of the families that come to Sunnyvale Christian School have come into the Kingdom and have made Crosswalk Community Church their home.

Many children come back to visit Sunnyvale Christian School and relay their love and gratitude for the uniqueness that the school brings, which is a loving community that accepts each child where they are and loves them regardless of the challenges they may face.

No matter what the numbers have been we have sensed God's Presence in what we do.  Whether it was 4 students or 300 students, God has shown His favor to us, by the fruit that we see.
